本研究考察了行的长度对于阅读能力表现的影响。我们发现，行的长度为95cpl时阅读速度最快。参与阅读的人员报告说，他们或者喜欢，或者不喜欢比较长或比较短的行长。

那些喜欢行长为35cpl的用户说，较短的行长之所以能够使阅读变得容易是因为它使得眼球的移动减少了。那些喜欢行长为95cpl的人则认为，他们喜欢在一行上显示更多的内容。尽管有些参加研究的人员报告说他们感到阅读30cpl行长的文章时要快一些，然而实际情况是他们此时的阅读速度是最慢的。

从2004年9月到2005年3月，全美814家规模最大的报纸的发行量下降了1.9%。这个下降只是近20年来报纸发行量下降趋势的一部分，而这部分归因于人们对于互联网以及其他形式媒体的使用的增加（有线电视、卫星电视等等）。随着用户继续选择将网络作为其新闻来源，对于哪些因素能够改进用户在阅读新闻时的体验的理解就显得非常重要了。当行的长度为95cpl 时，参与研究的人员能够以相当快的速度阅读新闻类文章，同时还能保持较高阅读效率。尽管在不同行长的情况下，用户在阅读满意度方面没有什么差别，不过，那种能够支持人们进行较快阅读的行的长度将会对那些阅读网络新闻的用户的整体体验上产生影响。
